For decades, red light therapy has been cluttered with underpowered, ineffective devices. Engineer and entrepreneur Bill Wiedemann decided to change that. On July 1, 2016, he launched Lumara Systems with a mission to deliver clinical-grade effectiveness through engineering precision.
“What makes me upset is that most of the red light products people purchase do absolutely nothing!” Wiedemann says. “When I discovered that one of the major companies was delivering products that were less than effective, I set out to make a red light solution that was actually effective.”
Engineering First, Marketing Second
With 36 years in engineering and a Cal Poly San Luis Obispo degree, Wiedemann approached light therapy scientifically. His prototype offered 10 times the power of leading competitors. “You have to have enough power to achieve a result,” he explains. “It’s like trying to fry an egg with a Bic lighter—you need both heat and coverage.”
By delivering 20 MW/cm² uniformly across the skin, Lumara created the industry’s first panels capable of consistent, professional-grade results. Estheticians now rely on these panels to speed healing and improve outcomes.
Consumer Innovation with VISO
After clinical clients requested a retail product, Wiedemann developed the VISO mask. He spent a year evaluating existing masks and sourcing a factory willing to produce his uniform energy design.
“660nm equals results,” he says, referencing the wavelength with the strongest scientific support for collagen stimulation and skin health.
A serendipitous self-test revealed the power of close skin contact, leading to the now-standard five-day protocol. “I’m not going to try to sell a product that doesn’t work,” he insists.
Validated by Experts and Customers Alike
Clinics now move dozens of VISOs monthly, with one selling 75 in a single month. Customers share glowing reviews, from lifelong commitments to replacing entire inventories of other devices. Even Lumara’s manufacturing partners acknowledge, “Yours is the only one that works.”
Future Vision
Lumara is scaling rapidly, aiming for 1,000 units daily by 2026, while developing new products for the neck and décolletage. “This is your once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Wiedemann told his team. “We have such a great product that it would be sad and embarrassing not to have great success with these products.”
Recognized as a top-three brand by Associated Skin Care Professionals, Lumara continues to set the gold standard in red light therapy innovation.
