Severe weather does not announce which house it will damage. It exposes the ones that were already vulnerable. A shingle lifted by wind two summers ago, a gutter that has been overflowing quietly, a tree limb nobody got around to cutting back. The storm does not create those problems. It finds them, and it charges considerably more to fix them than prevention would have.
Homeowners in Pittsburgh deal with a genuinely demanding combination: heavy summer thunderstorms, high winds, ice and freeze-thaw cycles through winter, and long stretches of rain in between. Each stresses the exterior differently, and a house that handles one well can still fail at another. The work of protecting it is mostly unremarkable and mostly done well before the forecast turns.
Knowing the Condition of Your Roof
The roof takes the brunt of everything and gives almost no warning before it fails. Damage from wind and hail frequently does not produce an immediate leak. It lifts shingles, breaks the seal that holds them down, or bruises the surface in ways invisible from the ground, and the water gets in months later during ordinary rain.
By then it has usually reached the decking and possibly the insulation, and what would have been a straightforward repair has become a much larger job. Roofs also fail progressively, so the interval between the first minor problem and serious water intrusion is longer than people expect and offers plenty of opportunity to catch it.

Gutters and Where the Water Goes
Gutters are the least glamorous part of the exterior and among the most consequential. Their job is moving a substantial volume of water away from the house, and when they are blocked or undersized, that water goes somewhere it should not.
Overflowing gutters send water down the siding, into the fascia, and directly against the foundation. Repeated over seasons, that produces rot at the roofline, damp basements, and foundation movement. In winter, blocked gutters contribute to ice dams, where meltwater refreezes at the eave and backs up under the shingles.

The most common source of serious storm damage is something falling on the house. Assessing what is above and around the roof is one of the highest-value things a homeowner can do, and it is frequently ignored until after the fact.
Look for dead or partially dead limbs, branches overhanging the roof, split trunks, and trees leaning noticeably. Anything already compromised is what comes down first in high wind. Branches that merely touch the roof cause damage too, scraping the surface with every gust.
Siding, Flashing, and the Seams
Water finds joints. Flashing around chimneys, vents, skylights, and valleys is where roofs most commonly leak, because those transitions rely on materials fitted together correctly and sealed.
Siding matters for the same reason. Loose panels, gaps at corners, and failed caulking around windows let wind-driven rain behind the surface, where it sits against the sheathing and does damage that stays hidden until it is extensive.
Walk the exterior once or twice a year and look at the transitions specifically. Anything loose, separated, or visibly deteriorating is worth addressing before it is tested by weather.
Skylights and Openings
Any penetration through the roof is a potential entry point. Skylights are the most common, and older units with worn seals leak in exactly the conditions where a leak causes most damage.
Modern units with proper flashing kits and correct installation perform reliably for decades. The failures nearly always trace to installation shortcuts rather than the product. If you have an older skylight and have noticed staining on the surrounding ceiling, that is not something to monitor. It is already leaking.
Before a Storm Arrives
When severe weather is forecast, a short list handles most of what can be done at that point. Secure or store outdoor furniture, grills, and anything light enough to become a projectile. Clear gutters if they are obviously blocked. Close and secure any exterior openings.
Charge devices and locate flashlights before the power goes out rather than after. Know where your water shutoff is. Photograph the exterior of the house, since a dated record of the condition beforehand is genuinely useful if you need to demonstrate what changed.
Afterward, and Handling the Claim
Once conditions are safe, inspect from the ground and from inside. Look for missing or displaced shingles, dented gutters and downspouts, damaged siding, and any staining or damp on ceilings and upper walls. Do not climb onto a wet or damaged roof.
Photograph everything before any repair work begins, and keep receipts for anything you do to prevent further damage, since insurers generally cover reasonable emergency measures. Report the claim promptly, as most policies have time limits.
Have a reputable contractor assess the damage independently. Their documentation of what they find is often more thorough than a quick adjuster visit, and it gives you something concrete to work from if there is disagreement about scope.
Building the Habit
Most storm damage is not bad luck. It is deferred maintenance meeting bad weather. A roof inspection at sensible intervals, gutters cleaned twice a year, trees kept trimmed back, and a look at flashing and siding once a season covers the overwhelming majority of what can be controlled.
