Munir Griffin: Creating His Own Stage, One Note at a Time

From Camden to Brooklyn, This Jazz Saxophonist Is Redefining What It Means to Be an Independent Artist

For many musicians, success is measured by record deals, major tours, and industry validation. For jazz saxophonist, producer, educator, and entrepreneur Munir Griffin, success is something far more powerful: the ability to create your own opportunities.

As the founder of SaxMan Productions, Griffin has built a career that seamlessly blends live performance, music production, education, and digital innovation. From electrifying audiences with his signature fusion of live saxophone and DJ performances to mentoring aspiring musicians and creating professional sample packs for producers, Griffin is proving that today’s independent artist can thrive by forging a unique path.

Originally from Camden, New Jersey, and now based in Brooklyn, New York, Griffin’s musical journey has been fueled by passion, perseverance, and an unwavering belief in the power of creativity.

A Foundation Built on Jazz

Griffin’s commitment to music led him across the country to the prestigious UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Ethnomusicology and Jazz Studies in 2018.

His education exposed him to musical traditions from around the world, shaping a broader understanding of how culture, history, and sound intersect. Those influences continue to resonate throughout his work today, whether he’s performing live, producing tracks, or teaching students.

“Everything I do is rooted in creating authentic musical experiences and pushing the culture forward,” Griffin says.

Following graduation, he launched SaxMan Productions, transforming his artistic vision into a growing business. While the concept began in 2018, the company officially became established after his move to New York City in 2022.

More Than a Saxophonist

What separates Griffin from many performers is his ability to operate across multiple creative disciplines.

Through SaxMan Productions, he offers live saxophone and DJ performances, professional recording and music production services, original music releases, and educational instruction in saxophone, music production, and music theory.

Recognizing the needs of fellow creators, Griffin also develops and sells professional saxophone sample packs, giving producers access to high-quality recordings that can elevate their own projects.

This diverse approach has allowed him to build a sustainable business while remaining true to his artistic roots.

The Challenges of Independence

Like many entrepreneurs and independent artists, Griffin’s path has not been without obstacles.

Balancing finances, overcoming skepticism from others, and finding collaborators who genuinely share his vision have all been part of the journey.

“As an independent artist, I’ve learned the importance of discipline, patience, and surrounding yourself with people who truly understand the direction you’re building toward,” he explains.

Those lessons have helped shape not only his business but also his philosophy toward success.

Building Opportunity Through Creativity

Perhaps the aspect Griffin values most is the freedom that comes with independence.

“What I enjoy most is being able to create my own opportunities,” he says. “I have the freedom to design my own path, turn ideas into real experiences, and bring my vision to life without limits.”

Beyond performing, he enjoys the strategic side of the business—networking, planning, and transforming spontaneous moments into meaningful collaborations and growth opportunities.

For Griffin, creativity doesn’t stop when the music ends. It extends into every aspect of building a sustainable artistic career.

Beyond Music

While music occupies much of his life, Griffin has another passion that may surprise some fans: cooking.

He sees remarkable similarities between creating a memorable meal and composing music.

“Both involve experimentation, blending different elements, and finding the right balance to create something meaningful,” he says.

His appreciation for culinary arts grew during his time at UCLA, where a course exploring music and culture from around the world included preparing traditional dishes from various regions. The experience deepened his understanding of creativity beyond music and continues to inspire him today.

A Global Vision

Looking toward the future, Griffin is preparing for what may be his most ambitious undertaking yet.

Beginning in Portugal at the end of July, he plans to launch an international performance journey that will include appearances throughout Europe, the United States, and additional destinations worldwide.

The tour will combine performances at restaurants, live venues, and high-traffic public spaces, while leveraging social media platforms such as TikTok Live to engage audiences in real time.

More than simply a tour, Griffin sees the project as a statement about the future of independent artistry.

“I want to show that artists don’t have to wait for traditional opportunities,” he says. “You can create your own stage anywhere in the world.”

By merging live performance, street culture, and digital platforms, Griffin is developing a model that enables artists to connect directly with audiences, expand globally, and build sustainable careers on their own terms.

For an artist whose journey began in Camden and evolved through New York City’s vibrant music scene, the world is now the stage.

And for Munir Griffin, the next performance may be just around the corner.

As Munir Griffin continues to blend jazz tradition with modern entrepreneurship, he is demonstrating that the future of music belongs to artists bold enough to create their own opportunities—and courageous enough to share them with the world.
