PROPERTY UNDERGOES MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR RENOVATION UNDER PROPER HOSPITALITY’S NEW LEADERSHIP

Under Proper Hospitality’s new direction, Avalon Hotel Beverly Hills had announced the roll-out of a multi-stage, $2M renovation helmed by Kelly Wearstler, the famed interior designer who was responsible for the property’s original, award-winning design back in 1999. This refresh of Beverly Hills’ quintessential boutique hotels brings a host of upgrades and refinements including the new Viviane Restaurant by Bombet Hospitality Group and Executive Chef Michael Hung.

Proper Hospitality took over management of the Avalon Beverly Hills March 2015 and subsequently took over the former Viceroy Hotel in Palm Springs, rebranding it as the Avalon Hotel and Bungalows Palm Springs. The recent investments at both properties, which include upgrades to the award-winning Estrella Spa and the introduction of the new Chi Chi restaurant in Palm Springs, are all part of the company’s ongoing efforts to reinvigorate the Avalon Hotels Brand and strengthen its position at the forefront of the boutique hotel market.

The Avalon Hotel Beverly Hills’ improvements include refreshed public spaces and 84 upgraded guest rooms. Complete with European Oak floors, each room offers luxurious amenities, such as natural and sustainable bath products from Davines, plush Boca Terry robes, premium European linen sheets and mini-bars stocked with gourmet food and drinks, including Compartes Chocolates designed by Kelly Wearstler. To further enhance and personalize the guest experience, the hotel upgraded the in-room technology, adding Jawbone Jambox bluetooth speakers and Keypr tablets that provide access to a directory of on-premise hotel services. Through the new Keypr system, guests may schedule, order and track service requests, such as room service and housekeeping, all via an easy-to-use tablet. Beyond the guest rooms, other property upgrades include new staff uniforms by Uniqlo and six Avalon-branded bikes developed in partnership with Solé Bicycles.

The Hotel’s restaurant, which is centered around an iconic boomerang-shaped pool with private cabanas, has been fully re-designed to complement Chef Hung’s modern California interpretation of classic European and American cuisine. The interiors feature distinctively eclectic groups of seating, with a curated mix of custom and vintage furnishings, such as a 1950s Carlo de Carli settee alongside wood and brass dining chairs by American mid-century designer Dan Johnson. On the far end of the main dining room, the marble bar is a focal point and surrounded by vintage iron-forged bar stools refashioned with deep blue and ivory geometric-patterned leather sling seat cushions.

Outside, the custom-designed cabanas feature a soft palette of hand-painted trompe l’oeil patterns inspired by noted Italian architect Gio Ponti ornamenting the walls. Wearstler’s signature soufflé sofas, along with vintage-gilded Italian lounge chairs, Carl Gustaf Hiort af Ornäs’ 1950s beechwood lounge chairs and Pierre Chapo coffee tables offer a casual and cool outdoor-living vibe.

Overall, the refresh of the Beverly Hills property solidifies its position as one of the city’s most noted boutique hotels with an unparalleled guest experience and rich atmosphere that reflects the renewed vision of the Avalon Hotel brand.

The Avalon Hotel Beverly Hills, which is tucked away in a secluded residential neighborhood adjacent to Los Angeles’ most famous restaurants, shopping and cultural attractions, was originally built in 1949. Once a home-away-from-home for mid-century celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, Mae West, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, the hotel was given a second life and its current name when it was revamped by The Kor Group and Kelly Wearstler, Inc. in 1999 and was acquired by Proper Hospitality in 2015. With this acquisition, the Avalon Hotel Beverly Hills has been revamped with fresh rooms and public spaces by style icon Kelly Wearstler, and the much celebrated arrival of Viviane, a new restaurant and bar by award-winning chef, Michael Hung. Today, the property offers 84 guestrooms and suites, many with kitchenettes or private patios, a full-service wellness studio, an hourglass pool and patio with outdoor dining. It’s the quintessential boutique experience in the heart of Beverly Hills, all centered around a boomerang-shaped pool with private cabanas. www.avalonhotelbeverlyhills.com

Since its origins in the 1930s, the Avalon Hotel and Bungalows Palm Springs (formerly Viceroy Palm Springs) has defined the downtown Palm Springs resort and spa experience. The boutique hotel offers 67 guestrooms including 13 historic one- and two-bedroom bungalows, three pools, the Chi Chi restaurant, the Estrella Spa and multiple event venues – all nestled amongst four acres of grounds with views of the San Jacinto Mountains. www.avalonhotelpalmsprings.com

Proper Hospitality designs, brands and operates hospitality experiences inspired by the tradition of grand hotels, but reinvented for today. Each property is a unique reflection of the vibrant community around it, but shares the same excellence in service, convenience of location, and world-class amenities provided by its local networks of co-conspirators – innovators in food, beverage, technology, art, music, fashion and wellness. The company currently manages the Avalon branded hotels in Beverly Hills and Palm Springs and is opening its eponymously-named Proper branded hotels and residences this year, focusing initially on emerging urban innovation districts within dynamic U.S. cities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco and Austin. www.properhotel.com
